Silica Matting Agents
Matting agents based on silica, including silica gels, precipitated silicas, and fumed silicas, reduce gloss by creating microscopic surface roughness in the coating film. As these particles migrate toward the surface during drying, they disrupt the smooth film and scatter incoming light, producing a matte appearance.
Manufacturers can tailor different grades of matting silica by adjusting factors such as particle size distribution, porosity, surface treatment, and pH, allowing formulators to select the right material to achieve the desired balance of gloss reduction, clarity, and performance in a specific coating system.
